Cotton Thread Potpourri Heart (From Book: Captivating Crochet)

ADVANCED

• Heart is 4" x 4" not including the hanger.
• Size 10 bedspread cotton - 75 yards
• Size 7 Hook or size to obtain gauge

You can use whichever decorations you would like to add to this heart.

BEGIN:

Heart Side: Make 2

Rnd 1: Ch 16, sl st in first ch to form ring: ch 1, sc in same ch, 2 sc in each of the next 7 chs, sc in next ch, 2 sc in each of last 7 chs, join with sl st in first sc (30 sc).

note: for double treble crochet (dtr) yarn over (yo) 3 times, insert hook in next st, yo, draw loop (lp) through. Yo, draw through 2 lps on hook, 4 times. 

Rnd 2: Working this rnd in back lps only, ch 6, tr in next st, ch 3, skip next st, (dtr in next st, ch 3, skip next st) 3 times, tr in next st, ch 3, skip next st, (dc in next st, ch 3, skip next st) 2 times, for bottom point, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next st; ch 3, skip next st, (dc in next st, ch 3, skip next st) 2 times, tr in next st, ch 3 skip next st, (dtr in next st, ch 3, skip next st) 3 times, tr in last st, ch 3, join with sl st in 3rd ch of ch-6 (17 sts, 17ch-3 sps)

Rnd 3: Sc in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next ch, (sl st in next st, sc in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next ch) around, join with sl st in joining sl st on last rnd (85 sc, 17 sl sts).

note: for 1/4" - love knot(lk)  (1/4" -lk), draw up 1/4" - long lp on hook, yo, draw lp through, sc in back strand of long lp (see steps 1-3 of illustration)

For shell, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 2, *sc in 2nd st of next 3-sc group, (ch 1, 1/4"-lk, sc in 2nd st of next 3-sc group) 7 times*, ch 3, shell in 2nd st of next 3-sc group at bottom point, ch 3; repeat between **, ch 2 join with sl st in first sc. 

Rnd 5: Ch1, sc in same st, ch 1, shell in next sc, *ch 3, skip next lk, (shell in next sc, ch 3, skip next lk) 6 times*, dc in next ch-3 sp, dc in each of next 2 dc, shell in next ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in next ch-3 sp; repeat between **, shell in next sc, ch 1, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off.

FINISHING:

1. Apply liquid fabric stiffener to Heart Sides according to manufacturer's instructions (when I made this heart years ago, I just used elmer's glue and water).

2. Stretch and Pin the 2 hearts with straight pins to a piece of card board.

3. Allow to dry completely before you take them off.

4. Place potpourri in center of net backing and run gathering thread around outer edge of circle. Pull tight to form a bag. 

5. With wrong sides held together and potpourri bag between, glue shells of rnd 5 on Hearts together. 

6. For hanger, glue ends of gold cord to center top between hearts sides.
