Country Pot Holders (From Book: Captivating Crochet)

Each Pot Holder is 7" x 7 1/4"

F Hook recommended

BEGIN:

POTHOLDER SIDE (make 4)

Row 1: With color A (off white in picture), ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn (30 sc).

note: Work remaining rows in back loops only, unless otherwise stated.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn fasten off. 

Row 3: Join color B (light green in picture) with sc in first st, in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Repeat row 2.

Rows 5-6: With color A, repeat 3 and 4.

Rows 7-28: Repeat row 3-6 consecutively, ending with row 4. At end of last row, do not turn, fasten off. 

Rnd 29: Working around other edge, join color C (dark green in picture) with sc in any st, sc in each st around with 3 sc in each corner st, join with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 30: Working this rnd in both loops, ch 1, sc in each st around with 3 sc in each center corner st, join, fasten off. Hold two sides, wrong sides, together with stripes running up and down, matching sts; join color c with sl st in center top st, sl st in each st around; for hanger, ch 10, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off. Repeat with other two sides. 

SUNFLOWER:

Note: Do not join rnds unless otherwise stated. Mark first st of each rnd. TIP: Use a bobby pin. I always do!

Rnd 1: With brown, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around (18 sc)

Rnd 4: (Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) around (24 sc)

Rnd 5: (Sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) around, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off. (30 sc)

Rnd 6: Join gold with sl st in any st, (*ch 5 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each of next 2 chs, skip next 2 sts on rnd 5*, sl st in ext st) 9 times; repeat between **, join, fasten off. 

STEM:

With color dark green, ch 12, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch across, fasten off. 

LEAF: 

Rnd 1: With dark green, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in last ch; working on opposite side of starting ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, join with sl st in first sc (14, sts).

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, sc in last st, join fasten off. 

Tack sunflower, stem and leaves to one side of one potholder as shown in photo.

BLACKBIRD:

HEAD:

Rnds 1-4: With black, repeat same rnds of sunflower. At end of last rnd, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off. 

With color B, create a french knot and embroider an eye on rnd 3 of head. 

BODY:

Rnds 1-5: With black, repeat same rnds of Sunflower, At end of last rnd, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off. 

TAIL:

Row 1: With black, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn (8 sc).

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 7 sts leaving last st unworked, turn (7)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc first 2 sts tog, sc in each st across, turn (6)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across with 2 sc in last st, ch 2, turn, (7 sc, 2 ch)

Row 5: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across, fasten off. 

WING:

Rnd 1: With black, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 2 chs, 3 sc in last ch; working on opposite side of starting ch, sc in each of next 3 chs, 2 sc in last ch, join with sl st in first sc (12)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in each of last 2 sts, join. (18)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 sts, sl st in next st leaving remaining sts unworked, fasten off. 

LEG:

With gold, ch 11, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 2 chs, (ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 2 chs) 2 times, sl st in remaining 7 chs of first ch-11, fasten off. 

BEAK: With gold, (ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in last ch) 2 times, fasten off. 

Sew the head, body, tail, wing, leg and beak to remaining pot holder as shown in photo.
